Every time I'm in a stationery store I'm drawn to the aisle where they keep the notebooks, beckoned by those hundreds of blank pages, college-lined or wide-lined, spiral-bound or those flat, marbleized assignment books that we all remember from elementary school. It's worse in a bookstore where they have large sections of gorgeous, blank books: journals, sketchbooks, travel logs and the like. But did you ever wonder who buys those blank books? Did you ever wonder if anyone actually uses them? The truth is that there are plenty of people like me who love the blank page and those pretty blank books actually make great gifts to give on special occasions. It's not only writers who love blank books. So who would you buy a blank book for? A blank book would make a great gift for someone about to embark on a special trip, a tool to use to record impressions and memories of their journey. Small blank books are easy to tuck into a suitcase or carry-on bag. A blank book would make a great gift for an artist. Many blank books come unlined, and even the small-sized ones make great sketchbooks. More portable than larger sketchbooks, they're easily tucked into a pocketbook or tote bag. Blank books, either lined or unlined, make perfect gifts for children. Children are natural artists. They love to write and draw and doodle. Many blank books are geared specifically toward children, with brightly colored covers and graphics. Some even have thick black pages that are intended for use with the pastel and neon-colored gel pens that kids love. Blank books can make great gifts for readers, too. Many readers love to record the books they've read with notes about the authors, etcetera. A blank book serves this purpose well. And, of course, blank books are one of the best presents you can give to a writer. That goes without saying. The nice thing about blank books is that they are so versatile. They come in a large variety of shapes, sizes and textures. They can be vinyl or tapestry or leather. Covers come in elegant solid colors, or perhaps adorned with copies of famous artwork, or they can be fun and whimsical. Some, intended for journaling, even come with lock and key. Many come with built-in satin ribbons to use as bookmarks. It's easy to find a blank book to match any personality, and the price range they come in makes it a reasonable gift for any size budget (and those on a tight budget should be sure to check out the bargain section of your local bookstore since there are often great blank books there). Accessories complete the gift. When giving a blank book for a gift, be sure to accessorize it with a great pen (or charcoal or colored pencils for the artist). One great thing about giving a blank book as a gift is it's something the recipient will have for years, perhaps becoming a cherished keepsake or journal of their most private thoughts.
